UNC - Universal Naming Convention

So named because it provides a way fo identifying every object on a network. It does not provide any property information about the object. For property information consult the directory.

UNC Identifier Structure

A typical UNC might look like:-

\\GLM1\DATA1\APPS\WEBSTUFF\INDEX.HTML#FOOTNOTE

\\ - root identifier

GLM1 host name

\DATA1 volume name (if relevant)

\APPS\WEBSSTUFF\ directory/folder path

INDEX.HTML file name and extension

#FOOTNOTE bookmark within file (if appropriate)

\\	- root identifier

\DATA1	volume name (if relevant)

INDEX.HTML	file name and extension
#FOOTNOTE	bookmark within file (if appropriate)
