Formal Directory Services
One way to improve location services is through the adoption of (de facto or de jure) standards.
The following directory services go much further than the "personal" ones discussed earlier.
X.500 and its associated series of standards define a formal directory, directory access and security structure.

Known as the network that connects networks
Banyan VINES has connectivity facilities to connect to most other computer systems in the world.
Based on the Internet's Domain Names Service directory. Released in February 2000 as part of Microsoft's Windows 2000 Operating System.
NDS is currently the most widely used directory service in the world.
LDAP is NOT a Directory Service.
LDAP provide the means of obtaing information from a foreign directory service. Most of the previous directory services support LDAP. (Though some do it beter than others.)
