All data on the Internet is kept in a file somewhere. To access or retrieve that data we may take a copy of a file in full or use some management program to retrieve and send us the information required.

Traditionally data was stored in text based systems
Latest systems store graphics, and audio and video clips.
File Names
Unix - 24/256 characters, case sensitive, no spaces.
Macintosh - 27 characters, not case sensitive, spaces allowed.
DOS/Windows - 8.3 characters, not case sensitive, no spaces.
OS/2 HPFS - 254 characters, not case sensitive, no spaces, 64 KB attribute.
Windows 95 - 256 characters, not case sensitive, spaces allowed.
Windows NT - 256 characters, some case sensitivity, spaces allowed.
